PONNIYIN SELVAN - Chapter-wise summary - Book II - Chapters 11 to 20

 CHAPTER 11 - KAIKOLAR ARMY - தெரிஞ்ச கைக்கோளப் படை


Kaikolar army's representatives met the Prime Minister Anirudha. They expressed their wish to join the Prince in war at Sri Lanka. But, Anirudha dismissed the idea. Then they expressed their wish to work under Arul Mozhi Varman (AMV) after the King's demise. Anirudha promised them to tell that to the King. Whey they were gone, Anirudha asked his soldiers to bring Azhvarkkadiyaan (AA). 


CHAPTER 12 - THE MASTER AND THE DESCIPLE - குருவும் சீடனும்


Anirudha and AA had a talk. Through their conversation, the readers can come to know that the King Sundhara Chola and Anirudha were once classmates and friends. When, unexpectedly the throne came to Sundhara Chola, he asked Anirudha to be with him as the Prime Minister to guide him. And, Anirudha did as requested. 


We already saw that AA was Anirudha's spy. AA and Anirudha went to a cave so that AA could tell him all the information he had obtained.


CHAPTER 13 - SON OF PONNI - பொன்னியின் செல்வன்


Meanwhile, Kundhavai and Vaanadhi were heading towards Tanjore palace. So far, Kundhavai had avoided going to Tanjore palace. The reasons were...


=> Unlike Pazhaiyaarai palace, Tanjore palace had so many restrictions. 


=> Nandhini's presence would irritate her.


=> The King himself had asked the women of the Royal family to stay at Pazhaiyaarai.


But, when she heard from VT that PPV had been conspiring to bring Madhuraandhagan to the throne, she thought that she must be there in Tanjore. Moreover, she wanted to talk to Kandhamaaran who was believed to be stabbed by VT. (Of course, Kundhavai didn't believe it)


On their way, Vaanadhi asked Kundhavai why was AMV called the Son of Ponni (Ponniyin Selvan). Kundhavai narrated what had happened when they were young.


FLASHBACK


When AMV was 5 years old, their family went for a boat ride in the river Ponni. Everyone was enjoying the ride very much. Suddenly, AMV went missing. Men jumped into the river in search of him. After a while everyone witnessed something incredible. A woman appeared in the river out of nowhere. She was carrying AMV on her hands. The King swam to her and she gave AMV to him. When he swam back to the boat and turned back, the woman had disappeared. Everyone believed that the woman was actually river Ponni. Since then, the Prince had been known as Ponniyin Selvan meaning 'The Son of Ponni'.


CHAPTER 14 - TWO MOONS - இரண்டு பூரண சந்திரர்கள்


People of Tanjore received Kundhavai happily. Pazhavettaraiyar and Nandhini welcomed her. Kundhavai and Nandhini exchanged a few words. Since it was Navarathri, PPV had allowed all the people to enter the castle freely.


CHAPTER 15 - A SAD VOICE AT NIGHT - இரவில் ஒரு துயரக்குரல்


Dramas were enacted during Navarathri. Queen Vanamadhevi went to Durga temple to pray for the King. One night, when everyone was out, Vanadhi wanted to go to the terrace because she couldn't sleep (Courtesy: AMV). On her way to the terrace, she heard the voice of Sundhara Chola, the King. He screamed, "Save me! Save me!!". She rushed to his room and saw him lying in his bed. 


He further said, "Don't you have mercy? Yes, I killed you. But, why do you still torture me? You've been torturing me for the past 25 years. Are you not satisfied yet?". 


When she heard the words, Vanadhi was extremely shocked. She could see a woman was standing in front of the King. It was Nandhini. Behind her was PPV who was hiding behind a pillar. Vanadhi fainted and fell on the floor, as always. 


CHAPTER 16 - ILLUSION THE KING HAD - சுந்தர சோழரின் பிரமை


The next day Sundhara Chola called Kundhavai to his place and enquired about the health of Vanadhi. Neither the King nor Kundhavai knew the reason why Vanadhi fainted the previous night. The King told Kundhavai that he had lost his peace of mind in the recent years. He explained the reason behind it. He told her that what he had done in the past tortured him mentally. He also told her that what he was going to say was previously known to no one except his friend Anirudha and himself. Even Anirudha knew only a part of it, he said. He then started to tell her what had happened. 


A Flashback


Once when Sundhara Chola was young, he went to Sri Lanka for a war. They were defeated in the war and had to return. While returning through the sea, he jumped into the sea without anyone's knowledge and reached an island because he didn't want to go back to his country without victory. In the island, he saw a dumb girl and fell in love with her. So, he stayed there for years together. After so many years, men from his country came in search of him and told him that the crown was waiting for him. He left the island half-heartedly after promising her that he would come back for her. He reached his country and became the King. 


CHAPTER 17 - CAN DEAD TURN ALIVE? - மாண்டவர் மீள்வதுண்டோ?

Sundhara Chola reached Chola nation and became it's King. So, he couldn't go back to the island so long. Then, he started to have hallucinations of the dumb woman. He sent his men to find her. They returned with the news that she had committed suicide. Since then, he frequently had the hallucinations of the woman. In one of his hallucinations, the woman asked him to give the throne to whoever was appropriate. 


When he finished telling it, Kundhavai told him that secret plans were being made to bring Madhuraandhagan to the throne. Instead of becoming angry, the King became so happy and expressed his feeling that he would be the happiest person, if Madhuraandhagan became the next king. He felt so because he thought that the kingdom had had a curse. He believed that if AK succeeded him to the throne, he would also lose his peace of mind.


Kundhavai consoled him and returned. She believed that the enemies had done something like black magic to make the King think so. It was then her duty, she determined, to bring AK to the throne. 


CHAPTER 18 - THE MOST CRUEL TREASON - துரோகத்தில் எது கொடியது?


Just like the hospital in Pazhaiyaarai, Kundhavai built a free hospital at Tanjore also. The opening ceremony was so grand. Everyone in Tanjore was present there. The people of Tanjore chanted slogans in praise of the King and the Princess. Nandhini and Kundhavai met there and had a conversation. Nandhini told Kundhavai that Kandhamaaran was in her residence under medical care. She added that the spy named Vandhiyathevan who had come with him had stabbed him on his back and escaped. Kundhavai told her that she would visit her palace the next day in order to meet Kandhamaaran.


CHAPTER 19 - THE SPY WAS CAUGHT - ஒற்றன் பிடிபட்டான்


PPV was very much upset with the support shown by the public towards Kundhavai in the opening ceremony of the hospital. The news that Kundhavai was about to visit his palace in order to see Kandhamaaran added fuel to his fury. Since, he didn't want to see her, he prepared to leave the town. While leaving the palace, he had a conversation with Nandhini. Through their conversation the readers come to know that PPV and Nandhini's actual intention was not to bring Madhuraandhagan to the throne but something else. 


Meanwhile, Kandhamaaran was so excited that the Princess was going to meet him. He had already known about her beauty and so when she visited her, he naturally flirted with her. He narrated to her how he was wounded. He told her that Vandhiyathevan stabbed him when he went in search of him. 


Kundhavai didn't know whether to believe his words or not. She didn't want VT to be caught anyway. But, a maid brought a news that the spy had been caught. 


CHAPTER 20 - TWO TIGRESSES - இரண்டு பெண் புலிகள்


The maid told them that the spy was being walked to the castle through the streets. Kundhavai, Nandhini and Kandhamaaran went to the balcony of the palace and saw from there a man being brought. Kandhamaaran told them that it wasn't Vandhiyathevan (VT). Kundhavai became relaxed and Nandhini noticed it. Kundhavai identified that the man whom the soldiers brought was the son of the physician. She expressed her anger towards CPV and his men for arresting the man sent by her. 


Nandhini asked her if she sent him alone or with any other man. Kundhavai replied her that she had sent AK's messenger along with him. Nandhini told her that it must be the spy and the soldiers might have killed him. She told so in order to make Kundhavai worry. When Kundhavai was worried, Nandhini sadistically enjoyed it. Kundhavai told Nandhini that she was going to complain about it to the King. Nandhini opposed the idea mentioning the ill health condition of the King. As per Nandhini's suggestion, they decided to go to CPV to talk about it.

நீதி வென்றுகொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறதா?
