Nothing - Almost

ரஸ்கின் பான்ட் எழுதிய இளம் வாசகர்களுக்கான முக்கியமான தொகுப்பு (The Essential Collection for the Young Readers) படித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். இது ஒரு சிறுகதைத் தொகுப்பு. அதிலே The Funeral என்றொரு சிறுகதை‌. மூன்றே பக்கங்கள்தான். ஆனால், அது நம்முள் ஏற்படுத்தவல்ல தாக்கம் மிகப் பெரியது. அந்தக் கதையின் நிகழ்வுகளை இங்கே தருகிறேன். இது ஒரு மொழிபெயர்ப்பு கிடையாது. எனவே, இதைப் படித்த பிறகும் நீங்கள் அந்தக் கதையைப் படிக்கலாம். இதிலே சொல்லாத பல விசயங்கள் அந்தக் கதையில் இருக்கின்றன. ஒன்பது வயது மகனை தனியாக விட்டுவிட்டு ஒரு தந்தை இறந்து கிடக்கிறார். அவர் யாருடனும் அதிகம் பேசாதவர். அந்த இறுதிச் சடங்குக்கு வந்திருந்த பலரும் அப்போதுதான் முதல்முறையாக அங்கே வந்திருக்கிறார்கள். மகனோடு இருந்த நேரம் தவிர்த்து அவர் அதிக நேரம் செலவிட்டதெல்லாம் புத்தகங்கள், இசை, தாவரங்கள் ஆகியவற்றுடன் தான்.  அவருடைய உடல் ஓர் அறையில் கிடத்தப்பட்டிருக்க, மற்றோர் அறையில் அமைதியாக அமர்ந்திருக்கிறான் சிறுவன். அவன் தந்தையின் உடலைப் பார்த்தால் குமுறி அழுதிடுவான் என்பதால், அவனைத் தனியறையில் வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். பலர் வந்து இவனிடம் தா...

I felt extremely tired as I walked to the parking lot. The first and only thought in my mind was to reach home as quickly as possible and go to sleep.  I usually went by bus. But on that day, I had chosen to cycle to college. Since I had cycled after a long time, my thighs started to pain by evening.  We had a function in our department. As we were the senior most boys, we had to make all the arrangements and we kept doing physical work all day long.  I ambled to my cycle with the green coloured seat cover and kept my bag on its carrier. I took my water bottle out of the bag and emptied it into my thirsty throat. I stood for a minute or so regaining my energy which would be needed to propel the age old vehicle. Then I took the key and inserted it in the keyhole. The lock didn't open. It was actually my grandpa's cycle and he was long gone. My father used it once in a blue moon.
