PONNIYIN SELVAN - Chapter - wise Summary - Book II - Chapters 1 to 10

 CHAPTER 1 - POONGUZHALI - பூங்குழலி

It was a place called Kodikarai. It was situated along the seashore of Bay of Bengal. It was an evening time. A young and beautiful woman was rowing her boat towards the shore. She was Poonguzhali. After reaching the shore, she made sure that the lamp in the lighthouse had been lit. She saw a deer stuck in quicksand. She saved it. Then, she walked through a forest to reach a temple.

The saint in the temple asked her to wait for him so that she would guide him through the forest to reach his house. She sat on the compound wall and waited. While she was waiting, she heard the footsteps of two horses. Suddenly she remembered how two men had come there the previous day and asked her elder brother to row a boat to Sri Lanka.

The two horses approached the temple. The two men on the horses were Vandhiyathevan (VT) and the physician's son. When Poonguzhali saw them, she jumped off the wall and ran. VT also jumped off his horse and chased her.

CHAPTER - QUICK SAND - சேற்றுப் பள்ளம்

Poonguzhali kept running. Vandhiyathevan kept chasing her. While running he remembered the words of Sendhan Amudhan (SA). SA had told that he had a cousin who was so beautiful and that her name was Poonguzhali. He had also told that she lived in Kodikarai. VT thought that the girl he was chasing after should be Poonguzhali. He chased her to the sea shore. Suddenly, he fell into the quick sand and Poonguzhali came for rescue. VT talked to her. He told her that Sendhan Amudhan (SA) had told him that she was his lady love. Poonguzhali refused it.

CHAPTER 3 - LUNATIC - சித்தப் பிரமை

There was a lighthearted conversation between VT and Poo. Physician's son also came there with the two horses. Poo told VT about the two men who had visited the previous day. She told that they had introduced them as sorcerers. VT wondered who could be those men. Poo took both of them to her house. VT showed Kundhavai's letter to Poo's parents. They welcomed the two men and prepared food for them.

When VT asked Poo if he could be her love, she humourously replied that ahe had already got too many lovers and that she could introduce them to VT, if he was ready to follow her to a place that midnight. Listening to her words, VT thought Poo was a lunatic. (The reason behind VT's proposal was to befriend Poo and to get some help from her).

CHAPTER 4 - நள்ளிரவில் - MIDNIGHT

After dinner, VT spoke to Poo's father who was the head of the lighthouse. He asked for his help to reach Sri Lanka. The head replied that there was no one to row boat. Then he suggested to request Poo to row boat for them.

Later at midnight, VT woke up by the sound of opening the door. Poo went out and entered into the forest. VT followed her. She sang a song. He went to her asked who were her lovers.

CHAPTER 5 - IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA - நடுக்கடலில்

Poo asked VT to turn back and he did as directed. He was extremely frightened by what he saw. All along the shore, there were fire mouthed monsters. Though he wad frightened first, later he realized that the fire appeared because of the Sulphuric gas emitted by the earth.

Then, he requested her to row boat for them to Sri Lanka. Though she refused it, the way she spoke gave VT confidence that she would accept his request. Then, they returned home. In his dream, VT went for a boat ride with Poo.

CHAPTER 6 - THE HIDDEN HALL - மறைந்த மண்டபம்

The next day, VT couldn't see Poo. Only her mother and sister-in-law were there in the house. They told him that the head had gone to the temple. VT met him in the temple and went in search of Poo. While he was walking along the sea-shore, he wanted to take bath in the sea. He took off his knife and the letter and went into the sea. After a while, Poo came there. She took the letter and ran into the woods. VT chased her. Inside the woods, Poo stopped and told him that some men had come there in horses. VT thought they should be PPV's men.

Poo further told him that the physician's son went to them and assured them to tell where VT was so that they would spare him. Then, VT once again requested her to row boat for him to Sri Lanka. Poo accepted the request with a condition. The condition was that he should do her a certain favour when she asked. VT promised to do so. Poo took him to a dilapidated hall in the middle of the forest and hid him there. She asked him to wait there throughout the day for her signal.

CHAPTER 7 - DAUGHTER OF THE SEA - சமுத்திரகுமாரி

That night, Poo took VT in a boat towards Sri Lanka. In some way, she told him that she knew about the letter he had. VT suspected that Poo took him to kill him. He urged her to go back to the sea shore again. He warned her if she didn't go back, he would jump into the sea. Poo took it casually. He jumped off the boat into the sea. Poo also jumped into the sea to save him. She knew that he wouldn't allow her to swim back to the boat. (That's the psychology. Drowning people won't allow you to swim. They'll get hold of you strongly). So, she punched him on his nose. He became unconscious.

CHAPTER 8 - THE MONSTER ISLAND - பூதத்தீவு

They continued their voyage. (Of course, Poo had saved VT and he had started trusting her). VT told her that it was going to be a tough task for him to find the Prince in Sri Lanka. Poo suggested an idea.

She asked him to wait at the sea-shore of the island they were about to reach - so that she would enter into the island to enquire about the whereabouts of the Prince AMV. She insisted him not to enter the woods of the island at any cost. They reached the island and VT waited at the sea shore.

CHAPTER 9 - SRI LANKA - இது இலங்கை

As assured, Poo obtained information about the Prince. Then they left the island. She told that the Prime Minister of Cholas, Anirudha had arrived at Maadhottam (a place in Sri Lanka) to meet the Prince. She guessed that the Prince should have also arrived there the previous day. VT reminded her of the favour she had told him about. Poo asked him to ask the Prince if he remembered a woman called 'The Daughter of the Sea', (It was actually the nickname of Poonguzhali) and to tell him that it was she who rowed boat for him, only if he remembered her. VT accepted her request. Poo dropped him at Sri Lanka and returned.

CHAPTER 10 - ANIRUDHA - அநிருத்தப் பிரம்மராயர்

When VT reached Sri Lanka, Azhvarkkadiyaan (AA) had reached Rameshwaram. (Rameshwaram was & is an island city located between India and Sri Lanka. It's an Indian city). He, as usual, argued and quarrelled with the worshippers of Lord Shiva. Prime Minister Anirudha arrived there and asked AA to meet him in the hall in the island nearby. Eight of his guards escorted him to the hall.
